The Pablo Barrios de Pedasí Refuge has a very high ecological value, given in part by its geographic location.

The protected area's boundary constitutes approximatively 21 kilometers of coastline from the mouth of the Purio River to Punta Mala, and has a has a surface area of 15,000 hectares which 11,000 are marine habitat in the Gulf of Panama.
